Man rescued from boat with engine failure in Mountshannon Harbour, Co Clare

A man was rescued from an 18ft boat on Tuesday evening after its engine failed off in a lake touching Co Clare.

Lough Derg RNLI received a call for help from the Valentia Coast Guard and launched their lifeboat with four crew members onboard at 7.10pm.

However, when they arrived at Mountshannon Harbour, the boat was nowhere to be seen.

After receiving updated co-ordinates from the Coast Guard, the boat was found floating two miles south where it had anchored at Castlelough on the Tipperary shore.

The crew realised the boat's motor was on fire and advised the skipper to disconnect the motor’s battery and fuel line to the engine and to locate the fire extinguisher.

Once the engine posed no further danger, the boat was towed back to Mountshannon and tied alongside at 8pm.

The skipper required some minor first aid for a recent finger wound but had no serious injuries.

Speaking following the callout, Ger Egan, Lough Derg RNLI crew member said: "We would remind all boat users of the importance of doing regular checks on their boat’s engine and make sure it is serviced regularly.

"As we continue to enjoy the summer, we would also like to remind all users of the lake to respect the water.

"Always wear a lifejacket, always carry a means of communication and let someone on the shore know where you are going and when you are expected back.

"Should you get into difficulty, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."
