Man rescued by gardai and RNLI after spending 10 hours floating in sea

A man was rescued by gardai and the RNLI after spending 10 hours floating in the sea.

The man, aged in his late 40s, was pulled from the water approximately two kilometres off Whitestown Beach in the Louth town.

The RNLI, Garda officers, the Rescue 116 helicopter and a number of local search and rescue groups were involved in the dramatic incident.

The man has since been taken to Beaumont Hospital by air ambulance, having been brought back to shore by an RNLI lifeboat.

A Garda spokeperson told the Irish Mirror: "Gardaí attended the scene of an incident at Whitestown in Carlingford, Co. Louth on Monday 26 th July 2021.

"A multi-agency search operation was conducted and a male was discovered in the water, approximately 2km off the coastline. He was rescued by a RNLI lifeboat and taken to Beaumont Hospital by Air Ambulance."

RTE reports that the man had been floating in the water for over 10 hours after his inflatable dinghy capsized.

The man was wearing a flotation device, which the coast guard said was vital to his survival.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy who got into difficulties while swimming in a lake has died in hospital

The teenager had been airlifted to hospital in Dublin in a serious condition after he was pulled from Hollywood lake in Co Monaghan.

Despite the efforts of medical staff at Temple Street Children’s hospital, he passed away on Monday.

In a statement gardai said: “A male youth (14) taken from the scene by Air Ambulance was pronounced dead in Temple Street Hospital on Monday 26/7/2021.

“Gardaí are treating the matter as a tragic accident at this time. A file will now be prepared for the Coroner.”

The latest death comes after a spate of recent tragic drownings across the country.

On Sunday evenin,g a man in his 60s died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Tramore beach in Co Waterford.
