Man rescued after drinking alcohol and diving into River Wear near the Wearmouth Bridge

A man who had been drinking alcohol and decided to dive into the River Wear near the Wearmouth Bridge had to be rescued by the coastguard.

Sunderland Port Patrol rushed to the aid of the man and managed to recover him from the water with assistance from Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station on Sunday night.

It is thought the man had been drinking alcohol and decided to dive into the river from Panns Bank.

But luckily for him, it happened in front of the patrol boat and he was brought to safety.

The man became hypothermic and was cared for by coastguard officers and police until he was handed over into the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesperson for Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station said: "Sunderland Port Patrol boat was on scene with the casualty but required assistance to recover the casualty from the water.

"The casualty was recovered from the water into pontoons at Panns Bank before receiving treatment from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team.

"Once it was confirmed the casualty was all secure our volunteers were stood down and cleared to return to the station.

"It appears the casualty had been drinking alcohol and decided to dive into the river from Panns Bank.

"Thankfully this all happened in front of the patrol boat and they were able to support the casualty until the lifeboat arrived."

A spokesperson for the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The team were paged to reports of a person in the water in the vicinity of Panns Bank.

"As we arrived on scene the casualty had been recovered from the water by Port of Sunderland water patrol officers using their RHIB [Rigid inflatable boat]. He became hypothermic and was cared for by coastguard officers and police.

"The casualty was then handed over into the care of the ambulance service."
