Tower block residents got a fright when they saw a neighbour armed with a knife and a knuckleduster outside their door.
Paul Morrison, 40, could offer no reason for having the weapons and his lawyer said his behaviour defied logic.
Morrison appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week and admitted possession of the items in Allan Tower, Motherwell, on May 17.
Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said a householder heard knocking at her door and the accused shouting her name about 10pm.
The fiscal stated: "She viewed CCTV and saw the accused on the landing. He was carrying a lockback knife in the open position and also had a knuckleduster.
"Seeing this caused the householders great fear and they contacted the police.
"The accused seemed intoxicated. He put the knife in his pocket and went to a flat above.
"Police arrived and arrested him. He could provide no reasonable explanation for his possession of the weapons."
Lawyer Diarmid Bruce said Morrison has alcohol and mental health problems.
He stressed: "There is no difficulty with the neighbours.
"This seems to have been an aberration. There was no logic behind it at all."
Sheriff Andrew McIntyre said Morrison, who was on bail at the time, has a "bad" record, but agreed to defer sentence until later this month for reports.
Morrison was remanded in custody.
