A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “The pedestrian, a man in his 20s, remains in a life threatening condition in hospital and enquiries are ongoing.”

The incident caused traffic congestion in the area as roads were closed while police dealt with the incident.

Roads in the area remained closed for several hours, re-opening at just before 9pm.

A police investigation into the incident has been launched.

A spokesman for bus operator First West of England said: "We can confirm that there was an incident in Bristol in Westbury Road around 200 yards from the White Tree Roundabout involving one of our buses and a member of the public.

"First and foremost our thoughts are with the individual concerned and we have been working closely with the emergency services at the scene of this incident.

"We will also fully assist the relevant authorities in the investigation that will be undertaken including reviewing our onboard CCTV footage.

"We are not in a position to comment any further at this stage."

The Love Saves The Day festival - which is expected to be attended by around 50,000 people - is taking place at the Clifton Downs this weekend.
