Man released without charge following death of 60-year-old in rugby club car park

A man arrested following the sudden death of a Swansea businessman has been released without charge.

John Edward Griffiths died a year ago on September 3, following an incident close to Penlan Rugby Club in Heol Gwyrosydd.

The 60-year-old, of Heol Ddu, Tirdeunaw, was discovered in the rugby club car park.

Following his discovery, Detective Inspector Andy Miles, of the major crime investigations team, said police believed an ‘altercation’ had taken place prior to Mr Griffiths collapsing at the scene.

Speaking at an inquest opened shortly after Mr Griffith’s death, acting senior coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Colin Phillips said a preliminary post mortem report had been submitted, but his office was still waiting for the exact cause of death.

He adjourned the inquest pending police enquiries.

South Wales Police also said a 62-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death, but had been bailed pending further inquiries.

Now the force says Mr Griffiths’ death is not being treated as suspicous.

A spokesman added: “The 62-year-old man has been released without charge and the matter has been referred to the HM Coroner.”
