Man released from jail by mistake hands himself in and is now back inside

A remand prisoner wrongly released from prison before his sentence for having a knife has finally been jailed.

Jason Weyman, 44, of Thicket Avenue in Speedwell, was due to be dealt with on August 20 after admitting possessing a blade.

But Bristol Crown Court heard he was released from HMP Bristol on August 12 when confirmation was received that he was acquitted of other matters.

Alistair Haggerty, prosecuting, told the court: "They should not have released him until this case has been dealt with and they did."

Judge Michael Longman said: "The governor ought to be notified that this has happened."

The judge asked that the governor explain in writing what happened.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Releases in error are very rare but we take them extremely seriously.

"The police have been informed.”

Today (Tuesday, September 1), Bristol Crown Court heard Weyman found out police were looking for him and he handed himself into custody on August 27 - the day before his 44th birthday.

He admitted having a knife in his trouser waistband on Fishponds Road on June 12, saying be had no malicious intent.

Judge Julian Lambert heard it was Weyman's second offence for having an offensive weapon and jailed him for 146 days.
