Man released following Wigan stabbing that left man in serious condition

A 26-year-old man has been released by police after a stabbing in Wigan which left a man in serious condition.

Police were called to Westbourne Avenue in Leigh at around 8.45pm on Thursday, February 4, to reports that a man had been stabbed.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and attended a 25-year-old man.

The man was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Following the stabbing, a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the man has now been released with no further action to be taken.

Police say their enquiries into the incident are still ongoing and those with information are being asked to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Philip Housley, from GMP's Wigan district, said: "We understand that the community may be shocked by this incident, however, we currently believe that this incident is isolated and there's no wider risk to the community.

"We are doing all we can to get to the bottom of what happened and officers are already carrying out a number of lines of enquiry.

"We believe there may have been people in the area at the time that may have some vital information that may be able to assist us."
