A MAN accused of sparking a fire in a vacant block of land at Telarah on Thursday night has been refused bail in Maitland Local Court.
Danny Michael Farrugia, 40, is accused of pouring an accelerant on a vacant block on Elizabeth Street about 9.20pm and igniting it.
The fire quickly spread towards nearby railway lines, but neighbours and a passing motorist managed to extinguish most of the blaze.
Mr Farrugia was arrested and charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.
He appeared in Maitland Local Court on Friday and applied for bail, but it was refused by Magistrate Andrew Eckhold.
