Man recovered from River Tyne by emergency services after falling from Redheugh Bridge

A man has been recovered from the River Tyne after falling from the Redheugh Bridge.

Police officers were called out to the bridge over the river near to the Gateshead side at around 2.45pm on Wednesday after reports of concern for a man.

During a search of the River Tyne, a man was found in the water.

Firefighters in a fire boat were seen on the river during the search and rescue operation.

The man was taken to the Newcastle Quayside where police and paramedics were waiting near to the Tyne Bridge.

Northumbria Police said in their latest update that the man was "currently receiving treatment" and had been taken to hospital.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 2.44pm today, police received a report of concern for a male on the Redheugh Bridge, Gateshead.

"Officers attended and a man was found in the water. Emergency services are at the scene and the man is currently receiving treatment."

A fire engine and two ambulances remained at the scene on the Quayside around an hour after the man was recovered.

Emergency services were also sent to the Staithes on the Gateshead side of the river as part of the same response.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 2.45pm to somebody in the river at the Redheugh Bridge.

"We sent an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team vehicle and we're still at the scene."

The road has remained open throughout the emergency operation.
