Man raped woman in Manchester hotel room 'to get one over' on his friend

A man raped a woman after a night out "to get one over" on a friend, in a hotel room he was sharing with friends.

Daniel Dennis, from Wolverhampton, was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court of raping a woman after a night out with friends in the city's Printworks complex.

The group went back to The Place Aparthotel where a 25-year-old woman had consensual sex with one of Dennis's friends.

During that encounter, Dennis and another friend kept deliberating interrupting - something Dennis described in court as "c***blocking".

He said this had been payback as the friend had previously done similar things to him.

After the girl fell asleep next to the man she had consensual sex with, she woke up to find Dennis on top of her and attacking her.

Dennis denied rape in the trial, saying his encounter with the victim on September 7th 2014 was consensual.

The Jury rejected his explanation of the incident and found him guilty, Manchester Evening News reports.

Presiding Judge Hilary Manley told Dennis he shows "a blatant disregard towards women".

Judge Manley said: "You and your friends came to Manchester and acted in a way that even if you hadn’t gone on to rape your victim, was shameful. You show a blatant disregard towards women.

"It’s sometimes said by men who behave as you and your friends did that it’s just banter, and being lads together, but it reflects deeper and worrying attitudes towards women.

"You specifically targeted (the victim) due to your need for sex - or some desire to use your victim to get one over on your friend.”
