Man pulled out of water at popular beauty spot by firefighters

A man was rescued from a popular beauty spot in Runcorn, as firefighters rushed to the scene.

The emergency services were called out to Wigg Island at around 7.40am yesterday ( Sunday) following reports that a man was in the water.

Firefighters used a boat, two rafts and a rescue sled to bring the man to safety. He was then handed over into the care of paramedics.

The ECHO understands he was conscious and breathing after the rescue.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire said : "At 7.40am firefighters were notified of a man being in the Manchester Ship Canal in the Wigg Island/Old Quay Street area of Runcorn.

"Firefighters in a boat belonging to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service assisted the man in getting out of the water.

"He was then assessed by paramedics.

"Two rafts and a rescue sled also entered the water. Firefighters were in attendance for more than five hours."

Wigg Island is made up of around 23 hectares of reclaimed land and is hugely popular with walkers.

The site occupies a stretch of land in-between the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal.
