Man pulled from Scots river and rushed to hospital in early morning rescue mission

A man was rescued from a Scots river in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services raced to the River Esk in Dalkeith on Newbattle Road just before 4am on Tuesday to reports of a person in the water.

The Fire Service used rope rescue equipment to safely get the man out of the water as two fire engines, two water rescue units and one rope rescue team descended on the scene.

The man was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by ambulance and the extent of his injuries are not yet known.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 3.48am and a casualty was rescued from the River Esk in Dalkeith by our rope rescue team.

"We sent two appliances, two water rescue teams and one rope rescue team to the scene.

"We handed the casualty over to paramedics at the scene and were left at 5.15am."

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Police were called at 3.55am to the River South Esk on Newbattle Road, Dalkeith.

"A man was rescued from the water by the fire service.

"He has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary."
