Man pulled from River Mersey is taken to hospital

A man has been taken to hospital after a dramatic rescue at Liverpool Pier Head .

Emergency services were called to the waterfront just before noon today after a man was spotted in the water.

Police, fire and ambulance vehicles could be seen around Mann Island as part of the operation.

Ambulance officials confirmed they attended the Liverpool Pier Head landing stage "to reports someone was in the water" and the man was taken to hospital.

His condition is not known at this stage.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said they were called at 11.56 and on scene within minutes.

However they were not required as "the police had got the person out of the water on our arrival".

Police said officers were called to reports of "a concern for safety of a man" and he "has been taken to hospital for assessment".
