Man pulled from Mersey after being seen drifting out to sea

A man was rescued from the River Mersey after being spotted in the water drifting out to sea.

The man, whose age is not known, was seen struggling in the water close to Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton.

Following the sighting the HM Coastguard alerted the police and a multi emergency services response was launched.

To aid the rescue mission the police , fire service , ambulance service attended the scene.

Meanwhile the New Brighton Lifeboat launched to try and locate the person, with help from the Holyhead Coastguard who was on the phone to a 999 call handler.

In a bid to aid the search mission the National Police Air Service (NPAS) Helicopter was also sent up.

The man was located by the lifeboat and brought back to shore where he was treated by paramedics.

He was then transported to hospital by an ambulance.

The man's condition is not currently known.

A spokesman for Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We would like to thank all emergency services who attended what was an excellent multi-agency response and also the 999 caller who provided excellent information which enabled the casualty to be swiftly rescued."
