Man pulled 12in gun on mother's ex who barricaded himself behind door

A robber threatened his mother's ex-partner with a handgun at his home in Barry before later threatening to stab two teenagers while stealing their phones.

Billy Yeoman, 23, attended the home of Matthew Hatherell in Bassett Street at around 2am on March 5 and was initially invited in but his behaviour became erratic and he produced a 12in-long barrelled gun. He proceeded to threaten Mr Hatherell and his friend Jack Johnson with the weapon and they barricaded themselves behind a door while Yeoman threatened to "get them".

While leaving the flat Yeoman pushed a knife through the letterbox, made further threats, and told them to come outside.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday heard the defendant left the flat but proceeded to rob two 14-year-olds of their mobile phones in Holton Road.

Prosecutor Eugene Egan said Yeoman approached the two teenagers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and asked them "where he could buy weed". He then asked for £10 in cash but when one of the victims refused he demanded his phone or he "would stab him".

Mr Egan added: "He toyed with a metal object in his pocket, a kitchen fork, but the victims thought it was a knife and that's what the defendant intended." The teenagers both handed over their phones and a set of headphones before Yeoman ran off.

He was detained nearby by police and the stolen items were recovered and returned to the victims.

The handgun and five ammunition cartridges were later retrieved from Yeoman's flat in Holton Road but the weapon was identified as an air rifle which would not have been capable of being fired.

Yeoman, of Holton Road, Barry, later pleaded guilty to robbery, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, possession of a firearm, and possession of a bladed article.

The court also heard he had previous convictions for common assault, theft, public order offences, handling stolen goods, and burglary.

In mitigation David Pinnell said the defendant had longstanding issues with drink and he is believed to be suffering with ADHD which he is now receiving medication for. The barrister said his client wished to apologise to the two teenage victims and hoped to write a letter to them upon his release.

Judge Neil Bidder QC told the defendant: "The offences were committed when you were obviously intoxicated through drugs and drink, which aggravates matters.

"You present a risk of serious harm to members of the public. To a pass a determinate sentence on you is inadequate to protect the public from the risk of harm and serious violence from you. You need a long period of supervision from the probation service."

Yeoman was sentenced to a total of seven years imprisonment and will serve two-thirds of his sentence before he is considered for parole.
