Man posed as taxi driver to pick up and rape Leeds university student

A man who raped a Leeds University student after posing as a taxi driver has been jailed for 12 years.

Muhanad Adem was jailed for the rape which took place around Hyde Park, on December 13, 2018.

Adem, 29, of Lovell Park, was sent down at Leeds Crown Court today (Monday) after a jury took three hours to convict him unanimously.

The victim had been on a night out with friends when she got into the back of Adem's car believing it was a taxi.

She typed the postcode of her address into Adem’s phone but Adem drove in a different direction and raped her in the back of his car.

Adem drove off again but his victim escaped through a window of his car and alerted friends she had been raped.

Claire MacDonald, Senior Crown Prosecutor in the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service, described the attack as 'brutal and opportunistic'.

Following sentencing she said: "This was a brutal and opportunistic attack, late at night on a vulnerable young woman, who has been left devastated. The impact of sexual violence of this kind goes far beyond any physical injury and its effects for the victim are long-lasting and traumatising.

"I would like to pay tribute to the victim who has displayed immense courage and dignity during the investigation and prosecution. As a result Adem is today beginning a lengthy prison sentence.

"Our thoughts remain with her, as they have been throughout."
