A man with intellectual disabilities and drug problems has been sentenced to time already served for the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl.
On Tuesday, the County Court in Melbourne heard Edward Bunker was 25 at the time of his offending and living on the streets, while his victim had absconded from DHHS residential accommodation.
Bunker contacted his victim on Facebook in 2018, and they had discussed having sex, getting engaged and having children together.
They met for the first time at Southern Cross Station and took a train to Ballarat together, later meeting up at a relative of the victim's and having sex.
When the victim's aunt saw them at a bus stop together, she confronted them and called the police.
But Bunker lied to police officers, saying he was a friend of the victim's father.
The victim's aunt then sent him Facebook messages saying "she's only 12, you are seriously the scum of the earth".
"You were twice her age, albeit you were a person with an intellectual disability," Judge Kevin Doyle told Bunker.
He pleaded guilty to the sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16, but Judge Doyle said he was not of the view that his guilty plea indicated any real remorse.
Bunker has an IQ of 60, as well as autism, ADHD, foetal alcohol spectrum disorder and epilepsy, and a history of cannabis, inhalant and methamphetamine use.
He has already served almost two years' jail, and has been placed on an 18-month community corrections order.
He has been ordered to undergo a program for sex offenders.
