Psychologist son admits to killing his mum in house

A man formally admitted to killing his mum when he appeared in court today.

Robert Child, 37, was arrested and charged with murder after the body of his mum, Janice Child, 64, was discovered at her home in Kings Drive, Woolton, on March 6.

Today Child, of Kings Drive, Pensby, Wirral, entered a formal plea of guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder when he appeared in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court.

His plea of manslaughter will rest on the grounds of "loss of control" or "diminished responsibility", the court heard.

Child - whose title was given as "Dr" in court, and occupation as "psychologist" - spoke only to confirm his name, age, and address.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, said the trial would commence on Monday, August 24, once various reports had been completed.

Child was remanded in custody until that date.

A post-mortem examination concluded Ms Child had suffered "severe blunt force head injuries."

Crime scene investigators carried out a major search of her semi-detached property which was cordoned off after the tragedy.
