Man pinned under vehicle for 16 hours 'lucky to be alive' after it slid down embankment

The man's vehicle rolled onto his leg after he pulled over to the side of a road.

A man has been rescued after being trapped underneath his car for 16 hours on a remote road on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Emergency services responded to reports of a man in his fifties trapped underneath his vehicle on Taylors Arm Road at Thumbs Creek, west of Macksville, just before 8:30am.

A nearby resident driving by helped the man until paramedic crews arrived, said Acting Inspector Susan George from NSW Ambulance.

"I think this man's very lucky to be alive considering all the circumstances and the amount of time that he was pinned underneath his vehicle," she said.

"It really is a miracle that he's survived close to 16 hours trapped on a steep embankment, mostly in the dark of night, in relatively cold conditions."

Acting Inspector George said it is believed the 52-year-old pulled over and got out of his vehicle when it rolled onto him.

"I understand that the man parked his vehicle on the side of the road and the vehicle moved and slid down the embankment, trapping his leg," she said.

She said it took emergency services about two hours to free the man.

She did not know whether his family knew he was missing or if he had his mobile phone on him.

'Good spirits'

Acting Inspector George said the man was speaking to paramedics during the rescue.

"He was alert and in really good spirits. He looked relatively well, considering," she said.

A rescue helicopter landed about 500 metres away from the scene and the patient was airlifted to Port Macquarie Base Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Acting Inspector George has reminded motorists to be careful where they pull over.

"I think that people just need to be very mindful of where they park their vehicles and what they're doing on a side of a road," she said.

"I think this job is one of the very good jobs that we got to, and it's great to have a good outcome.

"He was very thankful to be released and on his way to hospital."
