Man pinned to the ground by police in train station after being refused travel

A man, who is alleged to have threatened train staff, was pinned to the ground by police at a Liverpool train station.

Footage of the incident has been widely shared across social media platforms, and show the moment transport police officers tackle the man to the ground.

The incident occurred at 11pm on May 30 at Liverpool Central Station, according to Liverpool Echo.

The police say a man and woman, who were travelling by rail together, were refused travel due to being "too intoxicated".

The man reportedly became aggressive towards staff in the station so transport officers removed them from the area.

It's reported the man became aggressive towards station staff so transport officers escorted them away from the station.

It's at this point, police said the man fell to the floor and became "very aggressive" towards officers, pulling their hair and punching two in the side of the head.

The 30-second video shows bemused travellers walking past as five police officers restrain the man on the floor.

The woman can be heard screaming at police to "leave him alone" while struggling to get them off him.

One of the officers shouts at her to "back away" before appearing to point something contained in his hand towards her face.

After another shout of "back away" the woman continues to move towards police, prompting the same officer to push her in the chest which makes her fall to the ground.

Onlookers watching the scene are then heard to groan as she hits the floor and screams.

The video ends with officers continuing to restrain the man while the woman sobs sitting on the ground.

British Transport Police said one officer had to be taken to hospital following the struggle to be treated for head injuries.

A man has been charged with two accounts of assault on an emergency worker, and a woman has been charged with obstructing a constable.

A spokesperson for the police said: "BTP officers on patrol at Liverpool Central Station on Sunday 30 May at 11pm were called to help staff when a man and a woman had been refused travel due to being too intoxicated.

"The man was being aggressive towards station staff, so officers intervened to attempt to calm him down.

"Both the man and the woman began to swear at the officers, who escorted them away from the station using railway byelaws four and 24.

"The man fell to the floor and became very aggressive towards officers, pulling their hair and punching two in the side of the head.

"One officer had to attend hospital to be treated for head injuries. The woman also attempted to pull an officer away from the man."
