Man pays tribute to 'kindhearted' Mancunians who responded after he admitted feeling 'lonely' in new city

Moving to a different city is a stressful prospect even in normal times.

But arriving in a new place when you can't mix with other people, and much of society including pubs and restaurants are shut is an even more daunting prospect.

So spare a thought for 22-year-old Jake Burns, who recently moved to Manchester from Belfast.

He has only experienced our city during the lockdown, and took to social media after admitting feeling 'lonely' in his new home.

Jake tweeted: "i know most people wouldn’t tweet this because it ain’t cool and it is a lil embarrassing but i’ve been lonely recently.

"I’ve moved to a new city and have no friends and i’d really like to make some.

"So if anybody wants to be my friend or has room for one more in their friendship group, i’d love that."

He says he has felt overwhelmed by the response he received from people online, and said he's been invited to parties, walks in the park and other events.

Some of the replies to his tweet included: "There is no need to feel embarrassed and feeling lonely is perfectly normal after moving to a brand new place.

"You’ll soon find out that us Mancunians are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet! As always I’m always here to listen if you ever need anything!"

Jake said he wanted to thank Mancunians for being 'kindhearted, thoughtful, loving and friendly' (Jake Burns)

Another read: "Manchester is a really friendly place. Once everything reopens, I'm sure you will be making friends everywhere. Never be afraid to offer friendship. Many people are too shy to ask."

Jake told the M.E.N.: "I've just moved to Manchester recently and only ever seen the city in lockdown.

"I tweeted thinking only my followers would see it last night but the response from Mancunians has been overwhelming.

"I’ve been invited to birthday parties after lockdown, walks in the park, coffees, nights out and even around for a BBQ when the weather gets better and we are allowed."

Jake said he originally visited Manchester for the Parklife Festival and decided to move here.

He said he wanted to thank those who responded and offered a kind word.

"I’m sure many others are feeling the loneliness during lockdown," Jake said.

"The elderly, students, or just everyday people like me.

"I hope this helps others reach out if they are feeling lonely.

"I just want to thank the people of Manchester for being so kindhearted, thoughtful, loving and friendly."
