Man outraged after friend lies about Halloween party so he wouldn't attend

As the end of October draws near, many of us will have spent this weekend getting into the spirit of the spooky season at various Halloween parties, or at special themed events at nightclubs up and down the country. But how would you feel if your friend told you they had cancelled their Halloween party at the last minute - but they secretly just didn't want you to be there?

That's what one man has claimed happened to him, as his pal sent him a text message to let her know her spooky bash had been called off just as he was putting his costume on. His friend had told him she was coming down with the flu, but his explanation made the man suspicious, so he drove to her house to investigate.

And, sure enough, the man's friend was still having her party as planned - just without the man present.

In a post on Reddit, he said: "I have a co-worker who invited me to attend her Halloween party tonight, but at the very last minute, right as I was getting dressed, she text me and told me that the party was cancelled since she wasn't feeling well. She said that she felt like she was coming down with the flu and that I shouldn't bother showing up.

"I was annoyed since I had already paid a pretty penny for my costume and snacks. My anxiety made me suspicious of her explanation, so I decided to investigate, so to speak.

"I drove to her place and parked a distance away to watch her house. Sure enough, there was a party going on. Costumed people were entering the house and I could see in the windows that the party was very clearly alive and well. I even saw the host hanging in the front yard with some other friends. I had half a mind to just get out of my car and confront her right there, but I controlled myself and just drove off.

"I'm back at my place now and both confused and angry. It's clear that she didn't want me to attend her party and I'm trying to figure out why. I seriously want to confront her, but I'm thinking about if I even should. Would I be able to confront her without coming off as an a**hole?"

Commenters on the post sympathised with the man's hurt feelings, but many of them said he shouldn't confront his friend, and should instead just remember that she "doesn't appreciate" him when it comes to future events.

One person said: "You won’t be an a**hole for confronting her, but don't. Just trust me, don't. It's going to go down like a lead balloon and you'll just come off looking like an asshole.

"For whatever reason, you were unwelcomed and you shouldn't try to get into it any further than that; places and people that exclude you, don't appreciate you. File it away and just recognise it for what it is. No answer you get is going to be flattering or make you feel better, I promise you that."

While another added: "Don't do it! You have a whole world out there, and your co-workers are not your friends. Still plenty of parties to hit up or ways to have fun. Politely decline any future invites, you owe her nothing, especially not your time now."

And a third wrote: "If they didn't want you there they should not have invited you or been upfront about you not being welcome. I understand you being upset, especially as you were out of pocket for the costume."

But some thought it was strange of the man to drive to the woman's house to see if she was lying to him, with one person commenting: "Clearly, it was not nice to take back an invitation and lie, but maybe she did it because you're the type of person to go to someone's house to check up on if they're really ill."
