Man ordered to pay £1,200 after 'makeshift scrapyard' discovered on greenbelt land

A man who used agricultural land to store vehicles, a boat, scrap materials and other debris without planning permission has been ordered to pay out more than £1,200 after appearing in court.

Daniel Henry, 42, of Dale Lane, Blidworth, was ordered to remove all items not used for agricultural use of the land on Ricket Lane in Blidworth.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty, was fined £784, ordered to pay a £78 victim surcharge and £402.50 toward the district council’s legal costs.

The site is on greenbelt land which is subject to council policies to preserve and protect the landscape.

An enforcement notice, which was issued by Newark and Sherwood District Council on March 15, 2018, stated the condition and use of the land was a breach of planning control.

In making its case to Mansfield Magistrates Court on May 3, the district council said the land was in a "poor and untidy condition" and was causing an adverse impact on the open and rural character of the surrounding landscape.

The court ordered Henry to stop using the land for storage of non-agricultural ‘paraphernalia’.

The district council’s director for growth and regeneration, Matt Lamb, said: “The land was effectively used as a makeshift scrapyard which is completely inappropriate for this type of setting, spoiling the setting of and encroaching into the countryside.

“It is totally inappropriate for this type of setting and surrounding landscape to be used in this way.

“We have a duty to preserve the land within the Nottinghamshire-Derby greenbelt and will take the appropriate enforcement action against people who breach planning notices.”
