Man opens Singh’sbury Local - and says resemblance to supermarket is coincidence

A shop owner may be getting a call from Sainsbury’s lawyers after calling his business Singh’sbury.

Mandeep Singh Chatha’s off-licence has become a tourist attraction in Wolverhampton after he erected the sign in orange lettering.

Customers have been lining up to take selfies outside his Singh’sbury Local that – some say – looks like a Sainsbury’s.

But former sandwich delivery driver Mandeep, 34, insists there is an innocent explanation, saying: “I decided on the name. My name is Singh and it’s on Bushbury Road.

"It’s just a coincidence. I think the nearest Sainsbury’s is a couple of miles away so it’s not exactly close and we are certainly not competition.

“I am just a small business owner trying to make a living.

The store bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the UK’s most famous supermarkets (SWNS)

“People keep stopping in their cars to take pictures with the sign and I’ve had many nice comments.

“I have heard nothing from a supermarket which has a similar name, so I see no problem with it.

“It’s a different logo, a different colour, a different company. Its a completely different.

Mandeep said his shop's resemblance to Sainsbury's is a 'coincidence' (SWNS)

The former sandwich delivery driver, who opened the store last month, has even registered ‘Singh’sbury Local’ on Companies House.

In 2017 businessman Jel Singh Nagra renamed his North Tyneside shop Singhsbury’s.

After Sainsbury’s threatened legal action, he renamed the store Morrisinghs – and Morrisons backed the idea.

He is following in the footsteps of a nearby business - Kent’s Tuck In Fried Chicken on Kent Street in Upper Gornal, West Mids.

Owner George Georgiou received a demand from American fast food giant KFC to change the name when he opened in 1999.

But he refused and it still bears the name today.

Sainsbury's has been contacted for comment about Mandeep's shop
