Man on the run after alleged sexual assault of Darwin woman in apartment

A 38-year-old woman is in hospital after she was allegedly sexually assaulted in her Darwin home by an unknown man.

Northern Territory police say the alleged assault happened in the early hours of this morning.

The woman was in her first-floor apartment in the inner Darwin suburb of Parap when the man entered through an unlocked balcony door about 12.20am.

Police allege the man forced the woman into her bedroom and sexually assaulted her before running away.

The man fled the apartment after the alleged attack.

Police said the woman was left with fractures and cuts on her face, as well as a broken arm and cuts and bruises to her body.

She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

This afternoon a police spokesman said detectives from the Sex Crimes Unit were "actively seeking the whereabouts of the suspect and are urging him to hand himself into police".
