April 26--A Chicago man on parole for attacking a woman was ordered held without bail Saturday on charges of cyberstalking the same woman, prosecutors said.
Steven Tate, 25, was charged with cyberstalking after he sent threatening text messages and emails to a 23-year-old woman with whom he had "an on-again-off-again romantic relationship" that began in 2011, according to Assistant State's Attorney Kim Przekota.
Tate is on parole after serving prison time last year for choking and intimidating the same woman, Przekota said in court Saturday. He was arrested Friday in connection with the cyberstalking charge.
The victim's order of protection against Tate expired in February, the prosecutor said.
On March 12, Tate sent text messages to the woman saying he would kill her and threatening her family, prosecutors said.
Before she ordered that Tate be held without bail, Judge Peggy Chiampas read the menacing explicit text messages aloud in court.
"I know where you live. I know where everybody in your family lives," Chiampas read. "Don't (expletive) with me. Ain't putting me in jail this time."
On March 14, Tate also sent the woman a video message of him and a cousin rapping threatening lyrics, Przekota said. The cousin held a handgun in the video.
Tate, of the 2200 block of East 69th Street, is due back in court next Friday.
