Man on parole for armed robbery charged in Logan Square liquor store holdup

Nov. 24--A Lawndale man on parole in a felony armed robbery case was ordered held on no bail Sunday after prosecutors say he took part in another armed robbery last month in Logan Square.

Maurice Ellis, 22, was arrested on a warrant Friday night at his residence and charged in connection to the Oct. 28 robbery of Tip Top Liquor in the 2700 block of West North Avenue, according to Cook County court records.

Ellis, of the 3100 block of West Arthington Street, was paroled in June after being sentenced to 10 years for armed robbery in 2010, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections website.

Ellis and "an unknown co-offender" entered the liquor store with a gun and their hoodies cinched tight around their faces Oct. 28, Assistant State's Attorney Mary Hain said Sunday in court.

They forced customers to the ground at gunpoint before getting behind the counter, grabbing the employee and taking $500, Hain said.

Ellis attempted to destroy the store's video surveillance system at one point, according to Hain.

The co-offender struck the employee multiple times during the robbery, she said.

Fingerprints left on the video surveillance system matched those of Ellis, Hain said, and he matched the physical description of one of the robbers given by witnesses.

In the robbery for which Ellis was sentenced in 2010, Ellis was convicted of robbing someone at gunpoint on the street in the 1500 block of North Talman Avenue on April 20, 2009, about 2:30 p.m., according to police records.
