Man on house roof throws roof tiles at police in standoff

A man began hurling roof tiles at police called to a domestic disturbance in the Netherton area last night.

Officers were called to Cumberland Gate at around 10pm on Tuesday to reports a man had climbed on to the roof of one of the properties.

Unconfirmed reports said he was armed with a knife and "slashed himself."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We were called to a property in Cumberland Gate at around 10pm last night, following reports of a domestic disturbance.

"A 39 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill and criminal damage to property.

"He is currently in custody."

Today one of the properties could be seen to have a large number of roof tiles missing, which lay shattered on the ground, and a clean-up operation was under way.

Staff from housing association Riverside Housing were at the scene picking up tiles which had been thrown to the ground.
