Man on cheesecake factory roof was wanted over Halloween shooting

A man who spent two and a half hours on the roof of a cheesecake shop and neighbouring beauty salon was wanted in connection with a shooting six days ago in Liverpool.

Part of Smithdown Road, and some surrounding side streets, were sealed off this morning as the man scaled the top of the building and refused to come down.

He spent about 150 minutes sitting on top of the roof, sometimes walking around, before he eventually came down.

It caused disruption for traffic and pedestrians between 10.30am and 1pm around Greenbank.

Now, it has emerged the 27-year-old was being sought by detectives following a shooting in West Derby on Saturday morning.

Officers had turned up at his address today, but it is understood he tried to escape, and hurried through a skylight onto the roof.

After he eventually surrendered, the man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

It follows shots being fired on Culme Road on Halloween, last Saturday, when loud bangs were heard at about 11.30am in the street.

Officers arrived at the scene and found damage to a property caused by a bullet and launched an appeal to find the shooter.

A woman, 20, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The man remains in custody today and will be quizzed by police.

The man spent his time sitting on the roof above Dafna's Cheesecake Factory and the Opal Rooms beauty salon.

He also made his way along the roof above the Buddy Bubbles dog grooming parlour.

Staff in the businesses were told to stay indoors, keep windows closed and stay away from the walls in case items were hurled down from the roof

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC, or 101 with reference 20000660430.

You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
