Man on bicycle shot in knee after being ambushed in alleyway

A cyclist was shot in the knee after being ambushed by two men as he rode through a Liverpool alleyway last night.

Police were called after the victim later stumbled into hospital.

The victim, a man in his 20s, is believed to have been shot when he was confronted as he rode his bike in an alleyway close to Romer Road,  Kensington , between 11.30pm and midnight.

Detectives  say the victim, who was riding a bike and had a dog with him at the time, was approached by two men, one on foot and one on a bike.

One of the men then blasted him in the knee.

The victim turned up at Aintree Hospital just before 12.30am today.

A police cordon remains in place and several police officers remain at the crime scene today.

A police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police are currently investigating after a man self-presented at the University of Aintree Hospital in the early hours of this morning with suspected gunshot wounds.

"Officers were called by hospital staff raising concerns for the victim who arrived at hospital just before 12.30am.  The victim, a man in his 20s, was treated for gunshot wounds to his knee."

Detectives are now trying to see if CCTV footage captured the shooting and urged witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Mike Dalton  said: “After speaking with the victim, we believe that the incident actually happened on the evening of 3rd July between 11.30pm and midnight near an alleyway off Romer Road, Liverpool.

"The victim, who was riding a bike and had a dog with him at the time, was approached by two men, one on foot and one on a bike. Here, we believe he was then shot.

“Officers are currently working with the victim as well as undertaking forensic, CCTV and house to house enquiries around the area of Romer Road between Kensington and Phillimore Road to establish the full circumstances of the incident."

He added: “Anyone that witnessed the incident or has any information to help us with our continued investigations to find those responsible should DM @MerPolCC or call 101.”
