Man of the moment

Due to the fierce competition in K-pop, many quality acts get overlooked because they aren’t with a big label. Thankfully, the TV talent competition Produce 101 gives opportunities to aspiring singers still waiting to be discovered.

A member of the boy band Hotshot, Ha Sung-woon was one of eleven singers who became an overnight success when viewers voted for him to join the temporary group Wanna One. After the group disbanded last year, the 25-year-old singer went solo, releasing his self-composed album My Moment, featuring the chart-topping songs, “Bird” and “Tell Me I Love You”. He has since gone on tour around Asia meeting his fans.

SONG AND DANCE

On March 30, the K-pop heartthrob met Thai fans at Ha Sung-woon 1st Fan Meeting In Bangkok: My Moment at Chaengwattana Hall, Central Chaengwattana. He opened with the catchy track “Don’t Forget”.

Sung-woon is an outstanding performer, with a remarkable vocal range and the ability to sing both powerfully and gently. He also has plenty of great dance moves, from the sensual in “Attention” to the adorable in “Bird” and “Tell Me I Love You”.

He performed seven songs. We wished that it could have been many more.

FANCY THAT

After the first song, Sung-woon was asked why he decided to write, arrange and produce the album himself. The well-rounded singer said he wanted to show his versatility. During one section of the event, he responded to random requests from fans. Most asked him to speak Thai to them. Sung-woon was very shy about speaking in a foreign language, but he expressed himself pretty well.

The highlight of this part of the evening came when one fan requested that Sung-woon do a dance battle with her. The MC asked her to get up and dance on her seat. The girl confidently showed off some provocative moves, which left Sung-woon stunned. The crowd burst into applause.

DEDICATED PERFORMER

Sung-woon gave his all to the show and his fan club Haneul (meaning “sky”) showed their appreciation with a fan-made video in which they told him why he meant the world to them. The singer couldn’t stop smiling. He told his fans that, because of their great support, he would devote himself to everything he worked on.

Before the fan meeting, Ha Sung-woon met up with Thai press at Chaengwattana Hall. Here are some highlights from the interview.

What do you like about Thailand?

When I come to Thailand, some drinks I have to have are watermelon and pineapple smoothies. I just tried Thai ice tea for the first time and liked it a lot. For travel, I like to go to to beach and it must be Pattaya. I was there for work before and want to see more.

Is it true that you got mixed up between durian and another fruit?

Yes. When I was in Thailand before, I tried a delicious fruit. It was probably mangosteen, but for some reason I thought that it was durian. So when I came back to Thailand, I wanted to try durian again. Of course, it was nothing like I remembered. I didn’t like the smell or taste.

You have a lot of friends in showbiz. Who have you been hanging out with lately?

I haven’t met my showbiz friends much lately, because they have hectic schedules. Recently, I’ve been hanging out with my friends from university.

What other showbiz work would you like to try?

Acting. When I was a kid, I enjoyed watching sitcoms. I would like to act in one.
