Man of the match debut for former Nottingham Forest defender after 18-month exile

Tendayi Darikwa marked his first game in 18 months by shining for Wigan Athletic during an eventful debut against Rochdale.

The Zimbabwe international joined the League One side last week after leaving Nottingham Forest.

He had not played since representing his country in the African Cup of Nations in June 2019, with his last Forest appearance coming three months earlier against Swansea.

That was because of a serious knee injury with the 29-year-old unable to break into the Reds team once he recovered.

However, he showed no sign of rustiness as it finished 3-3 against Rochdale with Wigan Today naming Darikwa as their man of the match.

In his player ratings, reporter Paul Kendrick wrote: "STAR MAN: Tendayi Darikwa: 8 - Hard to believe it was his first club game for 18 months, up to speed immediately and looks to have plenty to offer."

Darikwa himself took to Twitter after the game, saying: "18 months later... finally back out there disappointing result but we keep moving forward together."

Meanwhile, Reds left-back Nicholas Ioannou made his debut for Aris after coming off the bench for the final three minutes against Aris and AEK Athens.

Aris were beaten 1-0 with Ioannou spending the rest of the season on loan with the Greek Super League club.
