Man needs 20 stitches after being slashed across face in churchyard

UPDATE: Anthony Leather, 46, from Eccles, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause GBH, police have said. He will appear in court on June 13.

A man needed 20 stitches after being slashed across the face in a Salford churchyard. The shocking attack took place in the grounds of St Mary's Church in Eccles town centre.

In a post on Facebook Sgt Paul Mottram said a 46-year-old man was arrested by officers from the Eccles neighbourhood team on Saturday morning in connection with the attack. The suspect remains in custody for questioning.

The attack took place at 5.45pm on Monday. The victim was 31-years-old.

Sgt Mottram wrote: "On 6th June at 5.45pm , a 31yr old male was attacked in St. Mary's Church grounds in Eccles. The offender used a knife and slashed the face of the victim leaving him requiring 20 stitches.

"A 46yr old male was arrested this morning by Eccles Neighbourhood Team and is currently in custody. I will keep you updated."
