A man needed to have surgery after being assaulted in Monaghan last weekend.
The incident happened along the Kingscourt Road, just outside Carrickmacross, in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
The injured man, who is in his 50s, was assaulted by a lone attacker.
A garda spokesman said: "If you witnessed anything on the night in question or have any information that may assist our investigation please contact us at Carrickmacross on 042 9690190.
"No arrests have been made but investigations are ongoing."
