Online tributes are flowing for a Melbourne father found dead at a property in the city's west. (AAP)

A father-of-two has been identified as the man found dead in Melbourne's outer west, sparking a murder investigation.

Shane Brown's body was discovered just before 4pm on Tuesday at a property in Melton.

He is yet to be formally identified but multiple media outlets have named him as the victim.

Homicide squad detectives are investigating his death, with a Melton man questioned by police.

A Victoria Police spokesman told AAP there was not likely to be any further updates on Wednesday.

A former classmate at Melton primary school was among those to post online tributes after learning of Mr Brown's death.

"You was (sic) such a sweet funny cheeky young boy who was loved by lots of us," they wrote.

"Being in (your) class was pretty great and amusing too! Rest in peace dude."

A woman wrote he would be "missed by so many and in so many ways", while another added they would "never be the same over this".

"I love you," she posted.

Anyone with information on his death is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
