Man missing, feared drowned in Murrumbidgee River

SES volunteers prepare to search the Murrumbidgee River for a man who went missing while swimming yesterday afternoon.

Emergency crews will keep searching today for a man missing, feared drowned, in the Murrumbidgee River near Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Riverina.

Local police say the 20-year-old Junee man disappeared underwater at the Oura Beach reserve, upstream of Wagga Wagga just before 1:00pm yesterday.

A search involving police divers, the PolAir helicopter, and State Emergency Service volunteers got underway yesterday afternoon and continued until last light.

Inspector Adrian Telfer said the search resumed at 8:30am this morning.

"It's very much a coordinated approach," he said.

"We'll be scouring both the river banks a few kilometres downstream.

"Police divers, they'll be under the water and doing their best to locate this gentleman."

Inspector Telfer said the local man was at the river with a friend and police believe he was familiar with the area.

He said police hold grave concerns for the man and his family are with officers at the river.

"We're supporting them. Obviously he's been missing since yesterday lunchtime, so they're worried."

Inspector Telfer said searchers are facing tough conditions in the river.

"It is flowing quite significantly and visibility is low," he said.
