Man missing after father and son boating accident on Gippsland Lakes

Police Sergeant Anthony Dessent is leading the search for the boater at Lake Wellington.

A man remains missing after a boating mishap yesterday on Lake Wellington, on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria's east.

The 48-year-old from Golden Beach went to Lake Wellington about 4:00pm yesterday to rescue his elderly father who had broken down in the middle of the lake.

"The son has gone to assist and realised they need some more fuel, and a family member has provided that fuel," police Sergeant Anthony Dessent said.

But as the son was returning to help his father something went wrong.

"During that time, something has happened where the son and the boat went missing," Sergeant Dessent said.

The older man was found about 8:00pm last night and taken to hospital for treatment.

Missing man's boat found

Searchers scoured the lake until 1.00am when heavy fog made conditions difficult.

They camped the night at Holland's Landing before resuming the search at first light.

Police airwing, search and rescue police, and State Emergency Service crews are helping with the search.

The missing man's boat was discovered at Tucker Point on the south side of Lake Wellington about 9:30am.

"So they're just trying to ascertain if there are any footprints around that boat," Acting Inspector Nicole Cantillon said.

"There is thick scrub around the location so we'll be sending police in and SES to search around and hopefully we'll be able to locate him."

Lake Wellington, east of Sale, is the largest of the three main Gippsland Lakes, but is shallow and known to get rough quickly in windy weather.
