Man 'lost common sense' as he grabbed driver by the throat and smashed car up with baseball bat

A driver's car was smashed up by a man with a baseball bat in Top Valley. All the windows of the man's car, except the windscreen, were smashed by Russell Wade with the bat.

Wade grabbed the driver by the throat and swung the baseball bat in his direction in Ridgeway on May 12, 2021. The victim was badly beaten up by someone else.

Wade, 41, of Rockwood Walk, Hucknall, was handed a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, on Friday (February 17) after he pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon, common assault, and causing criminal damage. Judge Steven Coupland imposed 20 rehabilitation activity days and ordered Wade pay the victim's insurance excess of £495.

Steven Gosnell, mitigating, said: "This man completely lost his sense of common sense, as it were, and behaved in the way described". Judge Coupland said something had prompted Wade and another man to approach the victim, and the background may have been the way Wade perceived the man was treating a woman and children.

"He was badly beaten up by someone else," said the judge. "He was shocked and upset by what happened to him".
