Man lies to cops after travelling from Sydney: police allege

ACT police arrested a 36-year-old man on Monday afternoon for allegedly travelling from Sydney to Canberra before lying to police.

ACT Policing said they spoke to the Minto man and "a young person" on Sunday afternoon, when they both denied breaching public health directions.

"Further investigations indicated that they had travelled to the ACT from the Greater Sydney Region on Friday ... and had received advice not to travel to the ACT prior to their arrival," police said.

The man has been bailed to appear in court at a later date, and both people have left the ACT.

A woman was arrested on Sunday afternoon after refusing to check-in via the Check-in CBR app to a Tuggeranong shop after multiple requests from the store manager and police, ACT Policing said.

She has been referred to a mental health examination after demanding to see a magistrate's legal qualifications while in court on Monday.

The woman has not pleaded to the charges.

Six people have been arrested since March 2020 for breaching COVID-19 health orders in the ACT.

ACT Policing said they had conducted 674 in-person compliance checks of homes, hotels and businesses, and stopped 1877 drivers to speak with them about the current health orders.

"Canberrans by and large continue to check in at shops and follow stay-at-home or quarantine directions as required by the ACT Chief Health Officer. This is a credit to our community," Detective Superintendent Naomi Binstead said.

"I would like to remind people to report non-compliance directly to police, especially if an immediate attendance by police is required, not via social media."

For police assistance call 131 444 and only contact Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.
