Man left with serious injuries after falling down rock face during thunderstorm

A man who fell down a rock face in Ashton-under-Lyne yesterday afternoon has been left with serious head injuries.

He fell down from a vertical rock face in Stamford Park during the thunderstorms that hit Greater Manchester on Wednesday, July 28.

He also has potential spinal injuries.

The Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was called out to assist the ambulance service due to the 'precariousness of his position' and the 'difficult extraction route'.

15 members of the rescue team worked alongside the North West Ambulance Service to stablise the man.

They put him onto an immobilising vacuum mattress and maneuvered him onto a specialist stretcher.

This was then attached to a back-up rope and lowered down to level ground.

Once on more stable terrain, further treatment was possible before carrying him on the stretcher and up to the waiting NWAS ambulance so that he could be transported to hospital.

The Mountain Rescue Team said: "This job was an excellent example of teamwork on challenging terrain, in the middle of a thunderstorm, where all concerned came together to formulate and carry out a plan which gave the casualty the best possible care. We send him our wishes and positive thoughts for a speedy and full recovery."

Oldham Mountain Rescue was involved in the incident for over an hour and a half.

"As a rescue service we are happy to assist anyone in distress. We don’t judge our casualties and respectfully ask our followers to act in a similar manner. Let’s keep it positive folks," the Mountain Rescue Team said.
