Police have launched an investigation after a driver hit a pedestrian and fled the scene.

The 34-year-old man was left with a head injury following the crash yesterday morning at around 7.30am near Kilmaurs .

Hospital staff have described the pedestrian's condition as stable.

The man was struck by a black Vauxhall Corsa car which was travelling north towards Stewarton on an unclassified road between Kilmarnock and Stewarton near to Buistonhead Farm, Kilmaurs.

The driver of the car did not stop at the time but contacted police a short time later.

The 48-year-old female driver of the Corsa car was not injured.

Constable Jonathan Baxter at Ayrshire Road Policing Unit is appealing for witnesses to the incident.

In particular, he would like to speak with the driver of a white hatchback vehicle that is known to have been in the area at the time of the collision.

He would also like to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident, or may have seen a black Vauxhall Corsa being driven in the area either before or after the collision.
