Man left fighting for his life after violent burglary prompting six arrests in Wigan

A man was left fighting for his life in hospital after a violent burglary in Wigan this afternoon, police have confirmed.

Officers were called to Wellfield Road in Wigan at 2.15pm on Sunday following reports of a disturbance in the area, Manchester Evening News reports.

Four people were taken to hospital after emergency services crews arrived at the scene - and Greater Manchester Police confirmed a 43-year-old man was in a critical condition.

He is now fighting for his life in hospital as police made six arrests after the aggravated burglary.

A 23-year-old man was also taken to hospital who has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary . An 18-year-old man also went to hospital has since been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

Both men remain in custody for questioning.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and has since been taken to hospital.

A 24-year-old man and two women aged 44 and 19 were all arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault. All three remain in custody for questioning.

Detectives are now trying to find two suspects who they believe fled in a silver car in the direction of Acacia Crescent following the incident.

A cordon was set up on Wellfield Road while officers worked to carry out their enquiries at the scene, with increased patrols in the area - but police believe it to be an 'isolated incident'.

Detective Superintendent Howard Millington said: “Whilst we have six people in custody I would also like to stress that our investigation does not stop here and take this opportunity to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to piece together exactly what has happened.

“Although we believe that this is an isolated incident there will be a higher police presence throughout the evening and I would urge members of the local community to speak with officers if you have any concerns or questions.

“We have a dedicated team of officers who are working tirelessly to find the remaining  two of offenders and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

“Did you see the silver car making off in the area at the time of the incident? I am asking the public to please get in touch if you have any information at all that could assist our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5307, quoting incident number 1277 of 16/06/19.
