Man left disabled after mountain bike race crash awarded £3m in compensation

A man who was left severely disabled after a mountain bike race crash is to be awarded £3 million in compensation.

The cyclist, who cannot be named, was travelling at around 35mph at the time of the accident.

He suffered a 'catastrophic' brain injury that has left him "functionally blind", in a wheelchair and in need of round-the-clock care.

The man's relative sued the organisers of the race on his behalf.

The judge heard that the man had fallen and hit his head on a log at the side of the track after riding over the crest of a hill and leaving the ground.

The settlement was agreed in court between lawyers representing the man's relative and the race organisers.

It was approved by Mrs Justice Eady in a virtual High Court hearing on Wednesday.

The judge heard that the money would cover the Midlands man's care costs.

She imposed limits on what the press could report on the matter.

The accident happened ten years ago when the keen amateur mountain bike racer was in his mid-20s.
