The man said he had been punched in the face, breaking his nose, and had his phone, leather jacket and gold chain stolen.

Police said the victim attended hospital for his injuries which are not believed to be serious.

The victim's partner had posted on Facebook to appeal for information about the attack.

She said he had been left "shaken" by the incident and was left "covered in blood with a broken nose".

Merseyside Police said enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Phil Ryan said: “We are in the early stages of investigating an incident on Bold Street and we would appeal for anyone who was in the area in the early hours of yesterday morning to contact us.

“We will not tolerate such criminality and violence in our city centre or anywhere on Merseyside and we will work to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“Whether you come forward to us directly or anonymously, through Crimestoppers, we will act on all information provided."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook quoting reference 21000688793.
