Man left covered in bites after midges swarm tent like 'something from horror movie'

A hiker has shared footage of a swarm of midges surrounding his tent like 'something from a horror movie.'

Scotsman lan Mackie, who works for Edinburgh University, took the short video inside his tent while camping in Gleann an t-Slugain, Aberdeenshire.

He posted a video clip on Twitter showing thousands of the blood-thirsty insects descending on the entrance to his tent.

Mr Mackie said he was wearing gloves, long trousers and a top in the hopes that he wouldn't be too badly bitten.

But he said he still ended up with over 100 bites after the vents in the backs of his trousers were infiltrated by the little pests, reports the Daily Record.

He said a variety of circumstances had led to it being a perfect storm for the nuisance insect this year.

"The combination of the warm weather and the wet has been perfect for them this month.

"That and the wind not getting above 4mph for three days, we were doomed from the outset."

His Tweet led to others sharing their own memories of brushes with midge swarms in Scotland.

One person replied that she had "frightening memories" of a motorbike camping holiday on Skye and getting eaten alive by midges, adding that they somehow even managed to get under their crash helmets.

While another wrote: "I remember sitting by a loch on Skye once, watching an otter gracefully swimming through the still, calm water as the sun started to set.

"It was serene - but then the midges came out. They were relentless, even attacking the INSIDES of my eyelids."

Some others poked fun at the wee beastie, stating that midges were the reason the "Romans weren't able to conquer Scotland".

While another jokingly replied: "Every single one singing a song of bloodsucking violence. Sweet dreams."
