Man left blind by firework miraculously regains his sight after 50 years

A man who was left blind in one eye by a firework as a child has miraculously regained his sight for the first time in 50 years.

Christopher Pope said the "bizarre" moment happened when he woke up on Wednesday morning and realised he could see out of his right eye.

Christopher was 11-years-old when he was told he would "never see out of that eye again", after a horror accident in his back garden on bonfire night.

The 61-year-old, from Maghull, told the ECHO: "Fifty years ago I had a firework in my eye, I was eleven and it was in the back garden.

"It was the card of the banger that hit me in the eye.

"I've been told that many times I will never ever see through it again - you give up in the end.

"On Sunday night I thought I could see a bit of light but I thought 'no it won't be.'

"On Wednesday morning when I woke up I could see. When I woke up I thought 'what is that?' So I closed my good eye and I could see what I've never seen before. It's absolutely bizarre."

Christopher immediately made an appointment with his optician at Specsavers in Maghull, to tell them what had happened.

He said: "On Wednesday morning I was worrying something had happened because things like that don't just happen do they?

"I went [to the opticians] and he said 'this is unbelievable.'

"He brought in a younger woman because they'd never seen or heard of anything like that before.

"They asked if they could take a video of my eye."

Christopher has now been referred to an eye hospital to undergo further tests to try and establish what has caused his sight to return after all this time.

He said: "To have both eyes working, I can't remember what it was like.

"It is exciting. I've been a bit giddy since it happened because I kept closing my eyes to see if I can still see.

"It's absolutely unbelievable, that's what the opticians are saying.

"If I had a pair of glasses I could see perfectly; it's just a bit blurry at the moment."
