Man lands himself with strict curfew after claiming lost licence was his friend's

A man who claimed to be in possession of his friend's driving licence when he was stopped by police was lying and is now living under curfew.

Chadley Tolliver said the driving licence belonged to his friend Alexander Knight.

The only trouble was Mr Knight was not his friend, and had lost the licence 17 days previously. Tolliver was half way through a suspended jail term at the time of his arrest.

The 24-year-old, of Shortwood Road in Hartcliffe, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods and admitted breaching the suspended sentence.

Judge Euan Ambrose fined him £100 and ordered him to pay £20 compensation and £250 costs.

He also handed Tolliver a curfew of 6pm to 6am, running for a month until the end of his suspended sentence.

The judge told Tolliver, who has stayed out of trouble since: "You are a more mature and responsible person than you were two years ago."

Attending Bristol Crown Court as a witness

Dominic Morton, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court Mr Knight lost his driving licence in Bristol on New Year's Eve last year.

Tolliver was found with the licence when he was half way through a five-month jail term, suspended for 24 months, for dangerous driving.

Nicholas Lee, defending, said his client would be vulnerable if sent into custody.

He said that, previously, Tolliver had been led astray by the negative behaviour of others.

But the court was told he no longer associated with bad influences and was in a relationship.

Mr Lee said: "He has made positive steps towards his own rehabilitation."
