Man knocked to ground by rampaging thug in park ambush

A thug demanded cash and knocked a man to the ground in a park, before striking again and stealing a second victim's bike.

Police today said the man's first victim was set upon as he walked through Wavertree Botanic Park last night.

His attacker confronted him and demanded money.

He then punched the 33-year-old with such force it knocked the victim to the ground.

The injured man managed to escape with minor injuries as a result of the attempted robbery around 6pm on Wednesday and alerted police when he got home.

Police later received a call saying a cyclist, also 33, had his bike stolen by man matching the description of the man involved in the park attack.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and theft of a pedal bike.

He was taken to custody for questioning where he remained as of Thursday lunchtime.

Insp Andy Lloyd said: “Serious violence, regardless of whether this results in injury or not, will not be tolerated. We are determined to find those who threaten or harm others and cause fear in our communities.
