MEERUT: For the second day running, policemen in Meerut continued to search the body of a woman, whose husband has confessed to have killed her for not bringing dowry to help him tide over the financial crisis.
The matter came to the light when the family of 32-year-old Ruby approached Meerut SSP earlier this month. They complained that their son-in-law, Deepak Nirala was absconding and they don’t know the whereabouts of their daughter who was not picking calls. They suspected that something untoward had happened with their daughter.
The SSP, Prabhakar Chaudhary, formed a team. A manhunt was launched to trace the accused and his family, but to no avail. On Monday, Deepak arrived at Sardhana police station with two persons. In the initial interrogation, he refused having any knowledge about Ruby. But he broke down as police continued their cross questioning.
“Deepak told us that he had smashed his wife’s head with a stone. He cut the body into pieces and hid in the ground. He later said that he had thrown the body in the Ganga canal. We are trying to find the body and the man has been sent to jail,” said SHO Sardhana Brijesh Kumar.
The accused had faced losses in business during the pandemic and was asking for money from his wife’s parents, which led to the fight.
Police will now take the remand of Deepak to question him about Ruby’s body.
Rajkumar Gupta, Ruby’s father, told TOI that Deepak’s three-year-old daughter died due to lack of treatment a year ago.
